In the Southern Jurisdiction these are the Lodge of Perfection (4°-14°). The central focus of all significant ceremonies and formal Degrees in the Scottish Rite is the altar. Degrees in the Scottish Rite have titles, similar as the standard degrees. The origin of the Cryptic degrees were theorized to be invented in France together with the other degrees that were included in the Rite of Perfection, which later were collected into what is today the Scottish Rite, and that the Cryptic degrees were brought to America just like the Scottish Rite degrees by Stephen Morin from France in 1761.
